National Black Leadership Initiative on Cancer
The National Black Leadership Initiative on Cancer (NBLIC) is an outreach initiative of the National Cancer Institute (NCI). This program was established to serve as an effective means by which knowledge about cancer incidence, treatment and prevention is transferred from the research bench to the African American community in terms that are tangible and applicable to daily living. While the need for more cancer research remains, NBLIC is an acknowledgement of the fact that the advances made through cancer research will be of no relevance unless this information is made available to the African American community in a culturally sensitive manner. Thus the principal aim of the NBLIC is to positively influence the knowledge, attitudes and behaviours of African Americans about cancer, ultimately closing the racial gap in the fight against cancer. As a national community outreach program, NBLIC approaches the African American community through four regions. The Eastern Regional office at Harlem Cancer Center in New York; the Southern Regional office at Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta; the Western Regional office at Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science in Los Angeles and the Midwestern Regional office at the University of Illinois School of Public Health in Chicago. This UIC office has jurisdiction over twelve Midwestern states, namely: Illinois, Inidiana, Iowa, Ohio, Kentucky, Missouri, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma and Wisconsin.
