Sousa Archives and Center for American Music
The Sousa Archives for Band Research holds 74 percent of the extant Sousa Band performance collection of published and manuscript music, as well as photographs, news clippings, Sousa Band concert programs, artifacts, journal articles, and other documentary materials related to John Philip Sousa. Supporting materials of Herbert L. Clarke, Sousa's colleague, assistant conductor, and cornet soloist, include his performance library, solo repertory, photographs, correspondence, sheet music, lectures, journal articles, Sousa Band concert programs, scrapbooks, and sound recordings. Other Sousa-related collections include the papers of Sousa Band members and University of Illinois graduates Richard E. Kent and Bert Madden and the collection of Sousa Band vocal soloist Virginia Root. The Sousa Band gained widespread acclaim through national and international tours that brought American music and the music of European masters to a diverse audience during a 40-year period from 1892 until 1931. The papers of University of Illinois band directors A.A. Harding, Mark H. Hindsley, Harry Begian, and Everett Kisinger provide documentation of Illinois band-related activities for nearly a century. Audio/visual resources, monographs, and a core reference collection are included with the band-related special collections.
