A Neighborhood Revitalization Strategy: CityLab
in Morgan Park
Fall 1999
Morgan Park, a stable community, on the far southwest side of Chicago,
has experienced a loss of commercial establishments and an increase in
vacant land and dilapidated buildings as a consequence of the development
of the Interstate 57 expressway. The Beverly Area Planning Association
(BAPA) in Morgan Park asked the City Design Center for redevelopment plans,
in particular for a transit oriented development (TOD) for Vincennes Boulevard
near the Metra stations; infill affordable housing and related uses; and
land use recommendations and urban design guidelines.
The Center coordinated a joint architecture and planning CityLab studio
to address three geographic focal sector areas in Morgan Park. Students
planning for the north sector, an area immediately south of 103rd Street
and the Metra station, focused on new residential, commercial, and recreational
development, as well as improved transportation and open space links.
Students focusing on the central sector located around 111th Street and
Monterrey, designed new economic and civic uses, and a new public transportation
center. Lastly, students working on the south sector, south of 111th Street,
focused on infill and new housing, and cultural uses.
