A New Image for 18th Street: Facade and Streetscape
Improvements for Pilsen's Commercial Corridor
1997
Eighteenth Street serves as a major commercial corridor in Pilsen, providing
jobs, serving local needs, and attracting new dollars to the community.
As with most traditional urban corridors, Eighteenth Street is evolving
to meet changes in consumer preferences and needs. The Eighteenth Street
Development Corporation (ESCD) sought the assistance of the City Design
Center to improve the competitive position of this vital commercial district
through facade and streetscape im-provements. An architectural student
intern, working with ESDC under the guidance of a member of the architecture
faculty, developed alternative proposals for storefront facade and streetscape
design strategies to foster a unified identity while preserving the ethnic
character of the neighborhood.
