Accommodating Commercial Needs: Design Proposals
for New Commercial Centers for the Near West Side
1997
The Near West Side, home of the United Center stadium and Henry Horner
Homes public housing development, is experiencing considerable rehabilitation
and new construction of affordable housing. To meet the commercial needs
of this community, Residents Development Corporation and Near West
Side Development Corporation sought design ideas for commercial development
at several major intersections. The City Design Center coordinated a design
studio in the School of Architecture to develop schematic designs for
commercial centers for four locations: the intersection of Western Avenue
and Lake Street, the area around the United Center, over the Eisenhower
Expressway between Ashland Avenue and Ogden Avenue, and the area surrounding
Blue Island Avenue and Racine between Roosevelt Road and the Chicago and
Northwestern Railroad Embankment.
