Assessing Park and Recreational Needs: The Pilsen
Open Space Study
1996
Pilsen, a Mexican-American community in Chicago, has suffered from a
shortage of parks and open space throughout its history. The U.S. Forest
Service recommends 4 acres of open space per 1,000 residents in a community,
but Pilsen has only 0.54 acres per 1,000 residents. The City Design Center
interviewed senior citizens, adults, and children to better understand
Pilsen residents attitudes and needs to improve the design of parks
and recreational spaces in the community. The study identified significant
trends that can serve as a basis for development plans.
