Brownfield Redevelopment Sites
Spring 1999
The Chicago Association of Neighborhood Development Organizations (CANDO)
sought to capitalize on new funding initiatives available for properties
located in Brownfield sites and designated Empowerment Zones in Chicago.
CANDO chose the 4200 block of Lake Street as a case study in the hope
that the project would set an example for similar, future community-based
Brownfield redevelopment initiatives on Chicagos West Side, and
throughout the city.
In the Spring of 1999, CANDO approached the City Design Center for design
assistance to develop concept plans for the site with the following goals:
Demonstrate a range of redevelopment strategies, from the reuse
of existing buildings to new construction;
Develop design awareness for the community and potential users;
and
Demonstrate a variety of mixed uses in support of the primary industrial
use.
The Center documented existing site conditions and created four scenarios
for redevelopment.
