Lake/Kinzie Industrial Corridor Redevelopment Design
Spring 1999

Many organizations and establishments, including the Lake/Kinzie Leadership Council, Greater North Pulaski Development Corporation, and Shorebank Enterprises, have provided valuable input in redevelopment strategies for the Lake/ Kinzie industrial corridor. In Spring 1999, Bethel New Life asked the City Design Center to prepare a current redevelopment plan for the Lake/ Kinzie area, building upon previous planning studies.
The City Design Center organized four participatory design workshops attended by residents, businesses, and organizations in the Lake/Kinzie area. The workshops developed community-based principles and ideas for the potential redevelopment. Workshop participants devised specific programs for prototype focus areas, including new land use coordination, urban design definition, and efficient use of existing and new infrastructure. With this information and analyses of existing information, the Center prepared a planning proposal for use by Bethel New Life as part of its ‘smart growth’ redevelopment efforts.
