Linking Affordable Housing to Community Development
Spring 1999
To revitalize the North Lawndale community, neighborhood organizations
have focused on an integrated housing and jobs strategy that includes
affordable housing for current and future residents and job development
targeted to those residents. The City Design Center has worked with Lawndale
Business and Local Development Corporation (LBLDC) to develop a live/work
community to foster balanced and sustainable development. A central component
of this development objective is to encourage local employers to support
affordable housing opportunities for their employees in the community.
To assist LBLCD in encouraging employer assisted housing (EAH) in North
Lawndale, the City Design Center researched nationwide EAH program models.
It has targeted and is working with two hospitals, the largest employers
in North Lawndale. The Center will continue to assist its community partner
in targeting and developing incentive programs for new employers to locate
in the community and participate in housing linkage programs.
