Out of the Box:
Design Innovations in Manufactured Housing
2004 - 2006
Contrary to popular belief, manufactured
homes have long been an affordable and high quality housing option. In the past decade, according to HUD, 30% of new home construction
in the United States is pre-fabricated
or uses pre-fabricated components.
To dispel the stigma associated with the "trailer" home, and examine the uses of cutting-edge technology and innovative
design concepts, the City Design Center, in collaboration with The Field Museum is presenting an exhibit and catalog of "Design Innovations in Manufactured Housing." On display from February 4, 2005 to January 15, 2006, the exhibit illustrates the range of housing possibilities-from high-rise apartments designed with stackable modules to single-family one or two-story homes on urban, suburban, and rural sites.
Especially commissioned for this exhibition, the featured designs present creative solutions to fill the demand for more affordable, yet high-quality housing. Eight nationally recognized architects and industrial designers - David Baker, Bryan Bell, Carole Burns, Teddy Cruz, Yolande Daniels, Doug Garofalo, David Khoury, and Ali Tayar - have contributed
original models and drawings
that consider innovation in the design, materials, and manufacturing techniques of low-cost, factory-built housing.
The exhibit was curated by Roberta Feldman with Daniel Wheeler and Tasneem Chowdhury in collaboration with The Field Museum. The catalog for the exhibit, Out of the Box: Design Innovations in Manufactured Housing, designed by Matthew Gaynor and edited by Elva Rubio includes essays by noted critics and academics Lee Bey, Ned Cramer, Ellen Grimes, and Allan Wallis.
