Collaborative Educational Programs

Reintegrating Architecture and Planning in Design Education
Begun in Fall 1999

“Reintegrating Architectural, Urban Design and Planning Theory and Practice in Design Education” involves a two-year partnership between the University of Illinois at Chicago and Washington University in St. Louis. The experimental program explores the integration of planning and architecture education through a series of seminars and design studios at the two universities. Architecture, urban planning, and urban studies students participate in joint courses at each campus through the Internet and through inter-city field studies.
At UIC, studio courses were offered in during the fall 1999 and 2000 (see 1999 Morgan Park City Lab and The New City and East Garfield Park City Lab). At Washington University, studios were offered during the spring, including Urban Housing in St. Louis (2000) and De-urbanization/ re-urbanization: multiple scales of housing for St. Louis (2001).
In addition to the design studios, UIC and Washington University taught a joint seminar, Midwest Metropolis, in 2000, 2001, and 2002. This interdisciplinary seminar examined the history of the built environments of Chicago and St. Louis. In order to integrate architectural, planning, and urban design perspectives, the seminar focused on moments of crisis in the building and re-building of the city over the past century. For example, students studied the early 20th century comprehensive planning and zoning movements; the mid-century urban renewal period; and current tensions concerning disinvestment, redevelopment, gentrification, and sprawl. Students prepared projects on Chicago and/or St. Louis that examined some specific aspect of the urban landscape. All seminars included an ongoing exchange with a parallel course taught by Prof. Paula Lupkin of the School of Architecture at Washington University in St. Louis. As part of this exchange, students in both cities communicated with one another via email, exchanged materials on a course website, and held a joint course session via teleconference. In addition, each seminar hosted a visit from the other class. These visits included a tour of the city, presentations of student projects, and symposia involving students, faculty, and local practitioners.
