Affordable Housing

Sustainable Connections Project
Spring 1998

Argonne National Laboratories has been involved in building energy efficiency research including evaluating multi-family housing developments for energy efficiency and providing environmentally sustainable design criteria to architecture firms. In the Spring of 1998, Argonne requested the services of the City Design Center to develop web-based tools to assist in outreach and research for the Existing Building Efficiency Research Program and the Green Buildings Product Directory. Michael Iversen, a faculty affiliate of the Center, explained the program’s rationale: “In order to achieve ‘green’ affordable housing, a communication network based on appropriate information technologies is needed to provide access to the various current and relevant knowledge.”

The Existing Building Efficiency Research Program tools include a database of examples of completed Chicago area energy efficient building projects that exemplify energy savings, energy conservation measures, and energy efficient products and equipment. The Green Buildings Product Directory is a website documenting local ‘green’ materials, products, and systems available in the Chicago region.
