Sustaining History: Design Research for St. Olaf
College
1996
When St. Olaf College in southern Minnesota was embarking on the development
of a new student union building, they turned to a City Design Center affiliated
faculty member to assist in the process through identifying architectural
firms that had experience in similar projects. The College was particularly
concerned that the building sustain the historical context of the campus,
serve a public role, and meet the complex programmatic demands of a multi-purpose
student union building. The faculty member, working with a small team
of graduate architecture students, used a literature search and extensive
rounds of interviews to identify a short list of appropriate firms. Based
on the research, the College made the final decision about firms to interview
and commission.
