Washington Park
Planning Project
Fall 2003 - Spring 2005
In August 2003, the Chicago Housing Authority requested the assistance of the City Design Center in developing
conceptual plans and design strategies for the Washington Park Development. The Washington Park Planning Project began in the Fall of 2003 with a graduate planning studio. Student teams compiled information for the study area, including base maps with land use, census tract, demographic characteristics, market activity, and commercial services.
The Washington Park Design Education Workshops were the second
component of the Washington Park Planning Project and took place in the Fall of 2004. The City Design Center organized two workshops to familiarize former and current Washington Park residents with important principles of housing and neighborhood design. The workshops
were also designed to increase residents' design awareness in anticipation
of any potential redevelopment of the Washington Park communities.
The Washington Park Urban Design Studio was held in the Spring of 2005. Student teams took the goals and objectives of relevant stakeholders and linked them with the information collected from the planning studio. Student teams prepared urban design alternatives for priority sites, while creating planning recommendations.
Guest lecturers for the studio were Terry Peterson, Chicago Housing Authority Chief Executive Officer; Alderman Toni Prekwinkle of the Fourth Ward, and Mary Wiggins, president of Washington Park Homes Local Advisory Council.
