City of Whiting, Indiana Commerical Redevelopment Plan
Spring 2005
In recent years the city of Whiting,
Indiana, has sought to build upon its
industrial legacy to improve the quality
of life for its residents. Several
parcels of former industrial property
adjacent to its residential neighborhoods
became available for development
in the fall of 2004.
In January of 2005, Whiting contracted
with the City Design Center to
develop a plan for the best use of
this available property. The objectives
of the plan include providing
greater public access to the lakefront,
diversifying the city's property tax
base, and creating design standards
for new development to allow peaceful
coexistence between commercial
uses and neighboring homes. Any
new development is expected to catalyze
new growth in the community.
The City Design Center used a participatory
approach to this planning
project. A public meeting provided
some of Whiting's residents an opportunity
to express their vision for this
land's future. Through conversations
with the community, stakeholders,
and careful market analysis, the City
Design Center recommended a combination
of light-industrial, commercial
and recreational uses. The result of
this plan was a set of new uses that
were harmonious with the city's character,
supported its main street, and
provided new job opportunities for
this revitalizing region. |
