The University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) invites nominations and applications for the position of Director of the School of Art and Design, with appointment effective August 2003. The School is seeking an individual of outstanding creative or scholarly achievement, whose strong articulate leadership will continue to provide high national visibility for its programs. The School of Art and Design at UIC is one of four units in the College of Architecture and the Arts. The Director will work closely with the Dean and with the Directors / Chairs of the School of Architecture, the Department of Art History, and the Department of Performing Arts. The Director of the School of Art and Design will have the opportunity to provide leadership in new faculty recruitment. The diversity of cultural and professional activity in art and design found in Chicago is reflected in the wide range of curricular options that the School of Art and Design offers. The School enrolls approximately 600 undergraduate and 100 graduate students; thirty tenured / tenure track faculty and approximately fifteen adjunct faculty instruct coursework leading to the BFA and MFA degrees in Graphic Design; Industrial Design; Electronic Visualization; Photography; Film and Video; and Studio Arts (Painting, Sculpture, Printmaking); the BFA program in Art Education (Middle School and Secondary Certificate); and the MA Degree in Art Therapy. In its ongoing commitment to public partnership and exchange, the School of Art and Design has developed and administered programs situated at the vital intersection of university and community. Among these are: a Visiting Artists and Critics public lecture series; Gallery 400, which presents an ambitious schedule of curated exhibitions of national scope; a regional design education conference in association with AIGA, the Art Education program which works closely with public schools in the greater Chicago area; reciprocal international study / travel programs for students and faculty between England, Sweden, Switzerland, Germany, Italy, and Mexico. Previous initiatives have included projects with the Polk Brothers Foundation, which supported underrepresented minority scholarships and workshops, and curriculum development for and participation in the City of Chicago's Gallery 37 Center for the Arts. |

Qualifications: Professional degree and/or equivalent recognition of an active practice within one of the School's art and design disciplines or related field, which may include museum or curatorial practice, contemporary art and design theory/criticism, arts administration or advocacy. Appointment as Director will be at the rank of associate or full professor.
