Submitting a Proposal for Exhibition or Project:

Gallery 400 invites proposals for exhibitions and new projects. From 2002 to 2008 Gallery 400 commissioned new projects in a series entitled At the Edge, supporting new projects of an experimental and innovative nature from Chicago artists. As of 2009 that program is folded into the gallery’s larger program, which in total now includes commissions, curated exhibitions, and one-person exhibitions of large or small scale for the three spaces of the gallery.

Feel free to propose an exhibition of new work or of existing work. Given the gallery’s history of support for At the Edge commissions we are especially receptive to proposals for new work. Alongside exhibitions in the gallery space, Gallery 400 has the capacity to present projects that are public objects or architectural installations outside of the gallery; installations; events, seminars, or web-based projects; new media, video, and/or film installations; prototyping displays; sound works or radio plays; performance pieces; printed ephemera; and projects of similar scope. We invite artists and curators from the Chicago area, as well as the nation and beyond.

Proposals are accepted for the gallery’s three exhibition spaces, one larger gallery (1,500 sq. ft.) and two smaller galleries (250 sq. ft. and 410 sq. ft.). Proposals are reviewed by Gallery staff and faculty advisors from the College of Architecture and the Arts at UIC. Proposals are reviewed every month of the year. So rest assured, you will receive a response from us.

With your proposal please include:

1.  A resume.
2.  An artist's statement and/or other background material. OR
A proposal for a new work or project. In the proposal please be sure to be descriptive of what it is that will be created, how it will be achieved and what larger implications you expect of the work.
3.  A self-addressed stamped envelope of sufficient size and with sufficient postage to return materials you’d like returned.
4.  Documentation of work in the following form:

For Visual Arts, Design or Architecture include:
* A CD or flashdrive containing a minimum 10 and maximum 25 images of your work. Please organize the images in presentation software—we use both PowerPoint and Keynote. (We strongly discourage “loose” jpgs or tiffs on a CD!!)
* Be sure to integrate your image captions into the image presentation. Captions should include a title, date, dimensions, media and any other descriptive clarifying information for each work.
* For proposals, mockups of the planned work, in addition to past work, are accepted.

For Film, Video, Digital Art or Performance include:
* A DVD of your work.
* A list of works featured on the DVD along with the title, date and length of the submitted works. (Please note the order in which you’d like work to be viewed; all pieces may not be reviewed on long DVDs. We will view up to 15 minutes in initial viewing.)
* Any descriptive information that will clarify the video presentation.

For Sound include:
* A CD featuring a minimum 10 minutes of audio. (Please note the order in which you’d like work to be listened to; all pieces may not be reviewed on long CDs. We will listen to up to 15 minutes in initial viewing.)
* Any descriptive information that will clarify the audio presentation including title, date, and total length.

A Website is acceptable. If submitting a website, please direct us to the first section you’d like us to review, because our initial viewing will be limited to a maximum of 25 images or 15 minutes of moving images.

Please be clear and informative in indicating how the works get exhibited, this is particularly important for film, video, digital, performance and sound work.
