Bathroom / Shower

1. Doorways should be at least 32" wide for w/c accessibility.

2. Toilet height should be close to the same level as w/c for easier transfers. Elevated toilet seats are easier to stand up from than standard height seats. Padded seats may be more comfortable for some residents.

3. No sink cabinets enables w/c residents to use a frontal approach to sink.

4. Lever or asymmetrical faucet handles are easier to operate for people with poor grip strength.

5. Electrical outlets over sinks should be lower due to reach restrictions.

6. Toilet knob should not require strong digits to flush.

7. Mirrors can be mounted lower or angled downward for viewing shorter or seated persons.

8. Shower controls should be offset (not centered) to allow presetting of controls before entering shower.

9. Drain controls should be mounted higher than standard to limit bending requirements.

10. Hand held shower enables user to better control water stream. An adapted grip could be used if required.

11. Palm operated push top soft soap dispensers would be easier to use than bar soaps.

12. Combs, brushes, toothbrush with built up handles could simplify usage. A universal cuff would be an alternative.

13. Sink and toilet should be visually distinct from the floor and wall. Sinks should have overflow drain to prevent flooding.

14. Wall mounted toilets are easier to clean around than are floor mounted models.

15. Soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, hairbrush and towels should be in plain sight to encourage independence in hygiene.

16. Sink should be high enough to accommodate w/c residents. A "lip" will help contain errant water. Edges should be rounded for safety.

17. Shower room floor should be non-slip surface and be angled toward drain.

18. Electric razors are safer than straight or blade razors. Other electrical appliances should be used only with supervision.

19. Mirrors can be hinge mounted , to accommodate w/c or shorter residents.

20. Water faucets should be color- coded to help residents identify hot vs. cold.

21. Colored toilet seats would add additional visual distinction. Seats can be closed during non-use to discourage using toilet as garbage receptacle. Closing seat, however, may also discourage toilet usage.

22. Shower curtain helps keep water in shower, not on floor.

23. Towel bar can be lowered or mounted on the side of the sink cabinet for better accessibility.

24. Shower floor should have abrasive strips or shower mat for better traction.

25. Shower chair or seat should be sturdy yet comfortable.

26. There should be either no or less than ¼" threshold from room to shower stall.

27. Coated grab bars can be installed (rather than chrome) to decrease glare, add color and improve grip surface.
