Bedrooms

1. Bedspreads should be appropriately sized to decrease likelihood of falling over oversized bedspreads. Bed rails which fold down completely to the floor can also be a safety hazard as residents can get their feet caught in them. A bedspread is less cognitively demanding than tucking in multiple sheets and blankets.

2. Window curtains which slide on a rod are easier to operate than string and pulley systems.

3. Large rooms offer residents the opportunity to customize bed coverings, window coverings, furniture, artwork etc…

4. Bed height will impact the process of transferring w/c to bed. Bed height can be manipulated by using blocks, bricks, or a custom built base. An electric bed would be a more costly alternative.

5. A small shelf or table should be available near the bed to store nighttime items.

6. Dresser handles should not require strong grip to open drawers. Small knobs, handles, or drawers which open by inserting finger tips into drawer frame, would be poor choices.

7. Window openings should open with minimal force and allow air circulation, but not open wide enough to allow residents to climb through. This is especially important in multi-story facilities. Large windows improve natural lighting and allow better outdoor viewing. Each resident should have their own window in shared rooms to decrease territoriality.

8. Floor surface is consistent between the hallway and the bedroom.Floor coverings, if present, should be properly secured. Throw rugs are discouraged as they may slip or become unevenly surfaced causing a fall. Highly polished floors will increase relfeccted glare.

9. Individual room thermostats would allow residents to adjust temperatures to their individual comfort levels. Covers can be installed if necessary.

10. Closet width is sufficient to allow w/c access, which may be required in deep closets. If additional width is required ,swing away hinges can be installed on closet doors

11. Closet light should have long cord due to reach limitations.

12. Depending on clothes volume, 2 closet rods could be installed. A higher rod for longer garments at approximately 54" and a lower rod at 36".

13. Adjustable closet shelves offer more flexibility than wall mounted shelves. Rods can be hung from the bottom of shelves to save space.

14. Interior bi-fold closet doors swing away from rather than into the user.

15. By passing doors should have slot handles to allow the whole hand access and not limit door opening space.

16. If closet is walk-in style, a turning radius of 60" is required with an entry of 32" wide.

17. Radiators and garbage cans may be confused with urinals.
