    Garage / Storage

Garage/Storage

1. Handrails should be available for both sides of ramp and be visible at all points along ramp.

2. Shelving which is suitable for w/c users should be no higher than 54". Rollout shelves are helpful to residents with reach limitations. Grid shelving allows seated residents to identify items stored above eye level.

3. Light sockets and garage door opener buttons should be mounted no higher than 48". They should be visually distinct from the door frame.

4. Baseboards should present sharp visual contrast with floor surface. Baseboards should match walls not floors.

5. Railings should be mounted 1 1/2" from solid walls, so that arms can't get stuck between walls and rail in the event of a fall.

6. Eliminating floor clutter can lower the risk of falls.

7. Surface rugs, if present, should have a rubber backing to prevent slipping.

8. Ramp should have anti slip treads.
