Outdoors
1. An enclosed courtyard and outdoor walking path are visible from many viewpoints. Residents are able to orient easier to time of day and season of year. Multiple entrances provide easy access. 2. The courtyard has plenty of places to sit. 3. Shade is supplied by attractive table mounted umbrellas. 4. Elevated planters allow residents to garden if they choose. 5. Ground surfaces should be level. 6. Walking path should also be level and contrast with ground surfaces. Alternating path surfaces in strategic locations can increase way finding and orientation. 7. Path is wide enough to accommodate a golf cart for less mobile residents. 8. Wandering on path will always bring resident back to original starting point. 9. Walking path benches are easy to see and are placed periodically along the path. Benches with a back are safer, more supportive and comfortable. 10. Fences could be higher or disguised by bushes, flowers or vines to discourage residents from climbing over. 11. Lighting must be present to increase safety during evening activities. 12. Entrances to walking path are visually distinctive. 13. Thermometers add to resident's outdoor cues. |
