This web site deals with the issue of arthritis and exercise. It explains what arthritis is, why people with arthritis should exercise, and what could happen if they don't. It also describes the types of exercises people with arthritis should perform. Finally, it gives a list of programs offered by the Arthritis Foundation and gives people ideas of where they could get more information about arthritis-related programs.

This website gives an overview of nutritional needs and how they change with age. It also provides a nice list of vitamins, the role vitamins play in the body, selected sources of vitamins, and recommended amount for males and females to prevent any vitamin deficiencies.
SeniorNet offers a variety of book clubs, learning center, medication question and answer section, as well as a forum on successful aging. The "learning centers" are aimed at educating seniors about the wonderful world of computers. There is also a separate section on Health and Wellness which has information on every topic you could think of from Alzheimer's disease to alternative medicine. There is a section on current research regarding health issues as well that could answer alot of questions that your senior mentor may have.
This site is all about diet and nutrtion. You fill in what you have eaten or are planning to eat, and it totally breaks it down into vitamins, minerals, fats, carbo's,.... you get the picture. We decided to put in the typical student diet of double espresso and boy did it have a wealth of knowledge for us! This is a great program for individuals who really need to watch their intake, including those with HT, diabetes, cardaic disorders, CVA patients, and the list goes on. The site can be a little tricky at first, but with some practice it is very simple and well worth it.

There is a great deal of topics listed under each of these categories, and if the health topic you are interested in is not there they provide you with a tool to help you find information about it. This web site that deals with asthma and the elderly. It talks about how in older people some diseases such as cardiac asthma and emphysema have symptoms similar to asthma and can therefore be misdiagnosed.

The Illinois Department on Aging is a also a very interesting web site and it provides information to seniors regarding Community Care, Access & Social Services, Elder Rights and Public Awareness
This website features a list of toll free numbers which provide free health information, including publications and referral to local services. This web site also provides info on health care decision making, living wills, patient advocacy, and long-term insurance. There are also guides to associations and organizations including a listing of over 1000 national health related organizations and how to contact them, info on health and aging studies & statistics, as well as listings of medical centers and clinics throughout the country.

A site for the over 50 crowd. Its called the Age of Reason. The SIRC Senior Internet Resource Center, claims they are "The Only Search Directory EXCLUSIVELY For The Over 50 Age Group!" It offers links to over 5,000 sites of interest, and is easy to use. All services are free, including : e-mail clubs, singles e-mail, vacation and home exchange directory, info on different governments and politics, Age of Reason Cook Book, and a people search board. In addition, it has a Senior Search, which allows people to seek info relevant to their lifestyles, from antiques to working from home.
p.s. Check out the travel section! It has pictures of different sites and adventure travel photos, like white water rafting and hiking for adults only! So if you can't go on a vacation right now, at least you can see some tropical photos of people who can!
This is the Internet address for the cable program, Home and Garden Television. Senior citizens could access this site for leisure options relating to gardening and craft activities and projects. They could be introduced to new types of craft projects and get ideas on gardening.
Grand Times is a weekly magazine that covers everything from travel and book clubs to new products on the market. Once on the home page, it allows you to view different book reviews each week, explore new travel locations and tips, check out new services for seniors, and give input about the Grand Times website. It also has numerous links to other websites of interest to seniors (such as info. on bingo, golfing, health, legal info., and resources for widows to name a few).

This site is for seniors that would enjoy combining learning and possibly traveling. It is called ELDERHOSTEL, and is a non-profit educational organization offering inexpensive, short term academic programs hosted by educational institutions around the world. Seniors can live on college and university campuses and enjoy the cultural and recreational resources that go with them. Tuition is low and they even offer scholarships for those needing them. They also match the needs of those with disabilities to institutions that can accommodate them.
The web address can be useful for senior citizens who are looking for activities in their area. A brief description of organizations and volunteering oppurtunities, which include addresses and phone numbers, can be looked up by major cities in the U.S.. Liv On gives ways to find quality housing in the desired area of choice as well as desired price range. It also offers a service which shows the type of housing needed based on an interactive health check list which includes photos and floor plans if the person wants to look at them.
A resource for seniors who might like legal advice on issues regarding Medicare, Medicaid, SSI, nursing homes, aging discrimination, pensions, etc. NSCLC stands for The National Senior Citizens Law Center and was established to help older Americans live their lives in dignity and freedom from poverty through legal support of elderly clients. Anyone can write or send personal questions by telephone, mail or e-mail. It also has many other headings within the site to get more detailed information in regards to the Balanced Budget Act of 1997.

This site offers support to caregivers in several ways. A list of books on caregiving is available, and includes descriptions and excerpts from each book. The individuals who run the site offer workshops on caregiving to professionals and caregivers. Although these have been given around the country, the ones that are currently scheduled are not in the Chicago area. This is the CNN Interactive Web Site. It contains news stories on a number of different topics. In addition to general news stories, it contains stories on Health, Science, Sports, Books, Earth, Travel, Show Biz, and Weather. Many of the articles include video clips that can be seen on your computer.
This site contains cookie recipes that are constantly updated. Recipes that pertain to the current season, e.g. Christmas, Valentines Day, etc., are listed. The week's top ten recipes are also listed, along with International recipes. One can search for any recipe using cookie type, or ingredients.
