Why Pursue an Accounting Degree

Accounting is one of the fastest growing professions and the role of the accounting discipline has changed dramatically in the past decade. For many years its primary responsibility was to generate financial information for external purposes. Today, in an age of new technology, accountants participate in planning, coordinating and controlling the economic activity of business and non-business enterprises, and in auditing the management and financial reports of these enterprises. They have been asked to expand their services to encompass a broader range of information, including non-financial measures. The field of accounting therefore offers outstanding students one of the most challenging career opportunities available today. The rewards are ample both in one's professional growth and in salaries.

If you are seeking a career in accounting or corporate finance, a degree in accounting is essential. A formal education in accounting is vital for passing the professional examinations in both accounting and auditing. These examinations cannot be taken without an undergraduate degree and in some cases without five years of accounting education.

To assist you with choosing your career pattern, you should take full advantage of the opportunities provided by the Accounting Club, including the chance to meet and interact with practicing accountants from all types of organizations. It is also possible to join professional groups as student members--for example, the Institute of Internal Auditors or National Association of Accountants. Two other on-campus organizations that students can join are the Beta Alpha Psi and NABA

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, take the time to talk to your accounting instructors and advisers about the profession and your career objectives.
