UIC's IDS program focuses on what I believe to be the most important part of technology today.it's use in business. As an IDS major, my coursework consisted of not only IDS courses, but of core business courses as well, such as accounting, finance, economics, management and marketing. IDS courses are designed to complement and build upon these fundamental business areas.
Having had very limited previous exposure to business information systems, I found the diversity of the IDS courses stimulating. Courses such as introductory programming, database management, statistics, operations management, system design and spreadsheet analysis helped me learn which areas I enjoyed the most, while simultaneously giving me a well-rounded understanding of technology in business.
On top of the well-rounded coursework, the IDS department professors and personnel were very helpful both in and out of the classroom. If you're willing to approach IDS faculty, you'll find that they're always willing to go that extra mile to help you understand not just course material, but any relevant personal/professional interests as well.
Overall my experience in UIC's IDS program was excellent. As with any endeavor, the best course of action anyone serious about their education can take is to get involved. Being an active member in the IDS Student Organization, actively pursuing opportunities in the department and career services office, and taking seriously my studies enabled me to succeed as a student, land an excellent internship in my junior year, and roll right into a wonderful job as a business information specialist in a consulting firm after graduation. None of this would have been possible without the diversity of the program and the support of the IDS staff.
Good luck, be proactive, stay motivated, and hope to see you in the workplace.
