Marketing Students Win $2,500 Award
A team of CBA marketing students recently won first prize in a contest sponsored by the Women's Auxiliary of Nicasa, a non-profit agency providing drug intervention, prevention, and family support services throughout Lake County. Forty-nine college students, including teams from UIC, DePaul, College of Lake County and Loyola, accepted the challenge to develop a 40th Anniversary marketing campaign to bring greater exposure to the agency and the many services it provides. Led by Jennifer Davis, the UIC student team came up with a campaign that included four public events, related print ads, flyers and posters, and a revised agency logo. "We integrated many of the concepts we learned in David Koehler's Marketing class," says Jennifer, noting that her group's product was based on thorough research of the agency's needs and a survey of public perceptions and potential media outlets. Upon learning of their award, Jennifer noted that the project has not only brought recognition to the work of Nicasa but also to the caliber of UIC students and faculty. "We had a chance to show that UIC really knows what it’s doing," she says. Notes Nicasa director of special projects, Patricia Bowdidge, "What these students presented was a quantum leap above the others, not just because of the beautiful, well-coordinated material they developed, but because they went over and beyond to really understand our message." Judy Fried, Nicasa’s executive director, concurs. "They should be so proud of their outstanding efforts," she said. "Their plan demonstrates a level of professionalism beyond their years." Clinical assistant professor David Koehler accompanied the CBA team to the January 10 Nicasa board meeting where they were presented with the $2,500 prize check.
