FBC: As a new member of the Council, what motivated you to join?

Art:I have entertained the idea of becoming involved in a business or leadership organization for a number of years, but with the demands of business and home I never felt I had the time to give it. Due to some recent life changing events I've come to the realization that if I truly want to participate in something like this I need to dive in and do it. I decided to join a leadership organization to be able to share experiences and ideas with others. I joined the Family Business Council because both businesses that I have co-founded have had strong family elements to them. My positive experiences with other UIC programs sealed the deal.

FBC: It sounds like the timing was right for the workshop and Oil Express' particular needs.

Art:Yes, and as it turns out, while Mr. London was examining the corporate records and past agreements that dealt with the partnerships and employment of some of the shareholders of Oil Express, he discovered a few issues that could have caused problems for me in years to come. Mr. London's associations with other attorneys at his law firm helped in create solutions that guide Oil Express' directors and attorneys.

FBC:In addition to regularly attending general meetings and events, what else you do get out of being an FBC member?

Art:Besides attending the meetings, I recognize the need for intimate sharing of information and ideas in the safe and trusted environment [of forum]. Through forum, I have access to this environment, as well as a network of peers who understand my challenges and celebrate my success. Forum brings insight to the many intricacies that involve family, partners and employees of any family business.
