Business Economics Program Requirements

Students must satisfy the mathematics/statistics, computing/analysis and business literacy admission requirements. In addition, students who plan to major in economics must take two additional economics. These courses may be chosen from any 500-level economics courses not used to satisfy other requirements (except ECON 520, 521, 540, 541, 592, 593, 598, and 599).

Research Methodology: 2-4 courses (8-16 semester hours)

Economics candidates are required to take the economics research methodology sequence (ECON 534 and 535). Other course work in research methodology may be required and is chosen under the guidance of the PhD coordinator.

Economics Specialization: 6-8 courses (24-32 semester hours)

The business economics specialization courses should be selected in consultation with the PhD coordinator from the following courses:

Required:

  • ECON 502: Microeconomics II
  • ECON 512: Macroeconomics II
  • ECON 436: Introduction to Mathematical Economics
  • OR ECON 536: Advanced Mathematical Economics
  • ECON 592: Workshop in Economics

Two fields of specialization, one of which must be in economics, consisting of at least two courses chosen in consultation with the PhD coordinator. Courses can be chosen from 500-level courses in economics except ECON 520, 521, 540, 541, 592, 593, 598, and 599.

 

Additional Doctoral-level Course Work, Including Dissertation: at least 8 courses /32 semester hours minimum

Econ 599: PhD Thesis Research or additional doctoral-level course work chosen with the consent of the PhD coordinator and in consultation with the dissertation adviser. A maximum of 32 hours of thesis research credit can be applied toward the degree.

 

Other Course Restrictions

ECON 520, 521, 540 and 541 may not be used to satisfy any degree requirements. No more than 16 semester credits received in ECON 592, 596, 597, and 598 may be used to satisfy degree requirements.
