Human Resource Management Program Requirements

The area of inquiry in human resource management, offered by the department of managerial studies, is intended primarily for those who need the highest level of research training and who wish to pursue careers in colleges and universities, research institutes, and public agencies or industrial and business organizations. The HRM Area of Interest is research-oriented, emphasizing thorough theoretical and conceptual foundations of knowledge, as well as statistical, quantitative and computer methods.

Admission Literacy

Students must satisfy the mathematics/statistics, computing/analysis, and business literacy admission requirements. The PhD coordinator may also require the student to satisfy other course prerequisites related to the student's previous deficiencies or research interests.

Research Methodology: 2-4 courses (8-16 semester hours)

  • PSCH 443: Advanced Statistics I and
  • PSCH 543: Advanced Statistics II or equivalent

Other course work, if required, is chosen in consultation with the PhD coordinator.

Human Resource Management Specialization: 6-8 courses (24-32 semester hours)

The human resource management specialization courses should be selected in consultation with the PhD coordinator from the following courses (four courses and two semesters of the Research Seminar Series are required):

  • MGMT 573: Research Methods in Organizational Behavior and Human Resource Management (or equivalent)
  • MGMT 575: Topics in Personnel Practices and Relations
  • MGMT 576: Behavioral Science Applications in Human Resource Management (or equivalent)
  • MGMT 581: Organizational Theory
  • MGMT 596: Research Seminar Series

The remaining courses are chosen with the consent of the PhD coordinator or dissertation adviser. Additional doctoral-level course work, including dissertation: at least 8 courses (32 semester hours minimum). Two of these courses must be MGMT 591 sections in which the "topic" is the student's qualifying exam paper. There may also be additional PhD courses required by the PhD coordinator to remove deficiencies will count here, as will PhD-level courses desired by the student and approved by the PhD coordinator. Any remaining courses will be MGMT 599: PhD Thesis Research.
