Paying for your degree

College and Departmental Support

As a general rule, the College of Business Administration and the academic departments will make every effort within their budgetary constraints to offer financial support to full-time doctoral students. However, financial assistance is not guaranteed. Support may include teaching, research, or graduate assistantships. Assistantships include a full tuition and service fee waiver, in addition to a stipend. Limited fellowship support by the university and college is also available.

University-wide Fellowships

The following is a partial listing of fellowships administered by the University of Illinois at Chicago that are available to UIC students. Please contact the Graduate College or Office of Financial Aid for further information about these and other possible sources of financial assistance.

  • University Fellowships: These awards are based primarily on the academic promise and scholarly achievement of the applicant and are not restricted to any particular field of graduate study.

  • Abraham Lincoln Graduate Fellowships: This program is designed to increase racial diversity in the student body. First-year graduate students from traditionally underrepresented racial and ethnic minority groups are eligible to apply.

  • Illinois Consortium for Educational Opportunity Program: The Illinois Consortium for Educational Opportunity Program (ICEOP) was established by the Illinois General Assembly to provide financial assistance to members of traditionally underrepresented racial minority groups to pursue and complete graduate or professional degrees at Illinois institutions of higher education.

  • Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship: African-American, Hispanic-American, or Native American students at UIC who will be enrolled in UIC graduate fields of study where minorities have been historically underrepresented are eligible to apply for this award.

  • Diversity Fellowship: Directed to support of underrepresented minority students admitted to doctoral programs in any discipline. The fellowship includes a tuition and service fee waiver and a stipend for the first two years of study. An applicant must have a commitment from the admitting department to match the fellowship for the third and fourth year. This commitment can be an assistantship.

  • Travel Awards :The program and CBA recognize the importance of the PhD student to be able to attend and present important research at various conferences in the student's research area. Some funds are available at the Graduate College level. Funds may also be available from the student's departments and additional funds are available from the PhD program.
