Course
Objectives
This
course provides a contemporary overview of cost management and control
systems. The course is designed to
encourage analytical analysis and verbal and written communication skills.
Lectures and discussion are used to illustrate the material and students are
expected to attend all lectures. On average, a text chapter a week is
covered. It is crucial not to fall
behind. Prior to each class,
students are responsible for reading the material to be covered that day. Homework assignments are due immediately following
class discussion of the material. In
addition, team case assignments are due on the specified dates following
coverage of the material. Late
assignments will not be accepted.
Assignments must be word processed with a grammar and spell-check such
as Word 97. Statistical packages such as SPSS,
SAS, and LINDO; spreadsheet applications such as EXCEL; and internet business links provided in the instructors web
page should be used where appropriate.
Required Text
Cost Accounting: A Managerial Emphasis, 10th ed. (Horngren, Foster
and Datar) is available in the UIC bookstore with an accompanying student
solution manual to even numbered problems, eliminating the need to print out
electronic solutions. Solution manuals
of all text problems are also available during office hours from the
instructor.
