Assignment #3
Personal Web Page
due: 20 September 1999

For the next assignment, you'll create the beginnings of a personal web page with the intent to build upon it by the end of the semester.  It will also be used as inclusion into the School's web site.  (Please keep this in mind)  :)

With the introduction you'll receive in class tonight, in addition to your past assignment, you should have enough tools to create the opening page to your site.  HTML is a "basic" language whereby in most cases you only need to become familiar with "abbreviations" of common words to create "tags" that organize and build the web site in HTML (.htm ).  Up to this point, you have studied several sites of your choice and taken closer look at the html of a that particular web site analyzing it a bit through an editor. You can do this by selecting the "document source" selection in the file menu and saving the file as a .htm file.  This file can then be viewed in notepad or simple text or other text editors depending on what platform your working on.  This is a good way to understand how a fully developed web site works and may give you some ideas on what you might try to achieve in your web site.  Compare the text to the web site side by side by viewing the two windows at a time.

You can use a number of editing programs to create html or even create the web page all together as if you were creating a regular 8x10 document.  Some of the text editors might be notepad, simple text, bbedit, bbedit lite...or homepage programs such as microsoft homepage, cyberlive studio or netscape composer.  Your choice.  I think Mark Ladd has even introduced a rather simple editor on the PC's in the lab. UIC requires this first page to be titled "index.htm".

By next week - you should have a personal site that reflects architectural information of your choice.  This may include links to personal selection os sites, images of interest, images of personal work, etc.  You are only required to publish one page to this point and it must be posted on the web in your UIC address.  Remember the importance of keeping things organized.  You should create a folder i.e. "bobweb", "markweb", etc. where you keep all data that is directly associated with your web site and back it up to your zip so that you have it as a document.  REMEMBER, it could easily become a universal display of your work on all computers down the road.

I've included some links below as guides that I've used from different sources that provide you the basics for html programming.  You should keep them around as reference as your building your web site.  You should also keep the handout quite handy while your creating this or any other web site as quick references.

In adiittion to your personal website, you are to pin up your reasearch that your group has acquired and prepare for a brief, yet concise presentation to the class.  Please pin-up just outside the 'Basic Lab' in your groups and be prepared to discuss your research.
