BA 200: Managerial Communications

(required for graduation, offered each fall, spring, and summer term)

BA 300: Advanced Managerial Communications

Welcome to Managerial Communications. In these classes, students learn to identify and address the needs of their various audiences, whether preparing a presentation or packaging an entrepreneurial idea in a proposal.

Through discussions, analysis, case studies, informational interviews, exercises, and presentations, students expand their knowledge of how to communicate effectively. Additionally, they learn that their professional image is an important factor in how their messages will be received. They grapple with syntax, diction, tone, style, and format. Their presentations are videotaped and self-critiqued for improvement throughout the semester. They read articles and books to become acquainted with business culture while bringing the best aspects of their own culture to the class.

At least two evening sections are offered each semester for the convenience of those who need a night class. Each fall semester, one section is offered for graduate students in the business college.

Students make frequent use of the Writing Center, located in 100 Douglas Hall, to meet individually with tutors, who assess their strengths and offer additional assistance where needed.

The workload in Managerial Communications is intensive, but students consistently rate the course high in the value added to their education. They become confident in their skills as communicators and learn to put their best effort into their writing and speaking. They carry these valuable skills with them from UIC to their professional lives.

The dividends are enormous. As a result, they learn industria didat (“hard work pays”).
