Site MapHELP for Exercise 1
You should begin by taking advantage of online-access to the UIC Library.
By following the process described in the exercise objectives,
you will:
- define the problem: the format required for the information
is a bibliographic citation; the most recent several years of material should contain the
latest information;
- select a search interface, such as Ovid
(make sure that the Map Term to Subject Heading check box is selected if you access
MEDLINE or CINAHL);
- if you are unsure about how to use Ovid, try accessing the Duke University
Medical Center Library Ovid Tutorial 2.0, or other aids listed in the Session 3 &
4 Assignments folder under Help and Tips.
- select the appropriate bibliographic database to search, such as MEDLINE;
- identify search terms and synonyms such as bacterial growth or
films, synthethic biomaterials, adverse effects; then explode and/or focus the mapped MESH
terms;
- Combine the search terms in an appropriately
constructed search query to locate bibliographic
citations of research papers. This can be refined by searching with increasingly
specific search parameters, by date, or by format.
