Biomes are broad assemblages of plant and animal communities generally defined by the dominant vegetation.
This is an old concept in ecology, first established by the terrestrial plant ecologists F.E. Clements and V.E. Shelford.
Biomes paint a broad swath of an area based upon what the dominant vegetation looks like. A recent approach has been to be more specific by naming Ecoregions. Ecoregions are major ecosystems that result from predictable patterns of climate as influenced by latitude, global position, and climate.
