Macrophytic (large, as opposed to unicellular) algae are particularly sensitive to light, wave action, and grazing

-some species prefer high-energy environments dominated by light and high available nutrients

-others tolerate the lack of light, but cannot withstand the wave action

grazing-resistant species are frequently slow-growing
