Many different plant groups-notably including cacti and euphorbs, but also asters and lillies, have evolved special adaptations to the desert environment
- loss of leaves; leaves are replaced with photosyntetic stems
- protected by leaves modified into spines-
- herbivory can be especially destructive to desert plants
- stoma generally open only at night
- potential for water storage in their stems or leaves
