The objective of this class is to familiarize students with a variety of laboratory protocols for the analysis of water, wastewater, and soil used in environmental science and engineering. Emphasis in this class will be on understanding the theory behind the techniques; to go beyond "cookbook" analysis. In addition, the class will emphasize good laboratory practices (GLP) and quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) issues necessary for the validation of data quality used for design, regulation, and research.
Procedures covered will include
physical, chemical, and microbiological analyses. Laboratory reports
will be based on research/design questions through the analysis of real
samples. Report formats will be patterned after technical reports
issued by private sector, government, and academic contracts. A basic
understanding of chemical reactions (Chem112 or equivalent) is required
for this class.
