Module outline

The objective of this course is to introduce LEAP IGERT trainees and other biological science, planning, environmental science and engineering graduate students to ecological restoration activities in field sites in the Chicago metropolitan area. Students will develop the skills to critically evaluate issues and needs of various restoration sites based upon selected readings, site visits and presentations and discussions with the site manager/coordinators.

Although this is a required course for trainees in the UIC LEAP program, interested non-LEAP students are strongly encouraged to register.

Course Outline

4 credit hours
The course will consist of 3 week modules with various field site managers/coordinators
Each module will be composed of preparatory readings, an introductory lecture on the field site, the actual field trip followed by a discussion guided by students and site coordinator
Lectures/discussions to be held Friday afternoons 1:00 – 4:00 PM
Time and length of the field trip may vary depending on the distance to the field site
Grading will be based upon written positions papers (4x20%) and a group presentation/guided discussion (20%). Active participation is mandatory and non-participation will be deducted from the course grade.
