Information Retrieval and Search Engines
Knowing that there are different forms of information
retrieval and what each is useful for, can help a searcher find the information
that is needed, whether it be a subject search or a search for real time
information.
This web site was created as an analysis of the September
11th incident, answering the question “How are
communication technologies influencing the way that people interpret the
September 11th events?” We
hope to inform individuals of the best ways to use search engines in the event
of breaking news. Search engines are
not the best form of information retrieval to use when doing searches on real
time information, such as breaking news.
According to Richard Wiggins in the article The Effects of September 11 on the
Leading Search Engine, the best
place to find breaking news is television, radio, and online news sources.
This site was designed by Chris Antoniou, Chris Collins, Rocio Figueroa, Diane Ochsner, Lauren Selby, and Alicja Zubek, students in a communication technology class at The University of Illinois at Chicago.
