On September 11th, millions of people went online in order to search for news related to the terrorist attacks in New York and Washington D.C. What these people did not realize is that they were all trying to access the same online news sites. According to Lee Rainie in her article The Commons of the Tragedy: How the Internet Was Used By Millions After The Terror Attacks, 43% of Internet users say that they had trouble accessing the web sites they wanted to consult for news about the attack. The number of Internet users getting news had increased on September 11th. On a regular day before the attacks on September 11th, 22% of Internet users received news. On the day of the attacks, the percentage of users getting news increased to 28%. This news was sought after on online news sites. CNN.com had a 680% increase in the number of daily visitors, msnbc.com had a 236% increase in the number of daily visitors, nytimes.com had a 206% increase in the number of daily visitors, and cbs.com had an 819% increase in the number of daily visitors.
