The haptic component provides a tactile sensor along with force feedback. An instructor can adjust the haptic device to have a site on a root surface have a specific textural feel. When the student holds the haptic controller in his/her hand and activates the program, the simulator can help guide the student’s instrument movements. An instructor will be able to train the system for the necessary haptic guidance and tactile sensation for a specific root surface or tissue texture.
The video shows one of several periodontal instruments which can be engaged with the root surface (Wait for the video to download). A periodontal probe is shown moving along the tooth surface through the control of the haptic device stylus held by the operator. During this process the operator feels contact with the solid tooth surface.
