Use of Simulators in Dentistry

Dentistry is now beginning to use simulators such as the DentSim™ for training students.  This program uses tracker technology, not haptics.

Haptic technology is being introduced in:

the UIC Periodontal Procedure Training Simulator (see graphics).
       View using simulator with no gingival transparency.
  the Novint Technologies system for restorative procedures.

  the Iowa Simulator Project.

Haptics and robotics are being introduced as an important component in developing simulation environments.
        View using simulator with 100% gingival transparency.
