Computer
imaging concepts 1.
Types of graphic
images-Bitmaps and Vector
- Image-editing
programs are designed to work primarily with bitmapped images and are used for
photographs or painted images.
- Bitmaps
(raster images) are made up of an array of thousands or millions of
pixels.
- They are
larger files than vector produced files.
- They are
resolution-dependent, so that when magnified they appear jagged.
- Creates softer images and images can be
transparent.
- CorelPaint™,
Microsoft Photo Editor™ and Photoshop™ are examples of bitmap
editing programs.
-
TIF, BMP, JPG, GIF, PSD files
- Illustration
programs are designed to handle vector graphics and are best used on
the internet because of the small file size.

- Vector
graphics are made up of objects such as shapes, lines, and fonts, which
are defined mathematically, not by pixels.
- Vectors
are better suited to graphics composed of basic shapes, as in a
corporate logo. The files are smaller in size than are bitmap files.
- They are
resolution-independent, so they can be shrunk or magnified with no loss
of detail.
- Illustrator™,
Freehand™
and CorelDraw™ are examples of vector editing programs.
- EPS, CDR, AI
(Illustrator) files.
- Hybrid programs--combine both vector
and raster technology--Macromedia Fireworks™-PNG
files.
Graphics Image
Programs Used in Dentistry.
Bitmap (raster) imaging
programs in Dentistry are designed for images obtained from input devices such
as scanners, digitized x-rays, intraoral cameras,
dental caries diagnostic programs
(laser technology) and periodontal disease evaluation through intra-sulcular
viewing.
These input devices
are able to integrate graphics with window based practice
management software. They allow for rapid and easy to use tools for
seeing and manipulating the resulting graphics of the various input
devices.
They should have many of the tools found in
bitmap-imaging programs such as CorelPaint™
and Photoshop™.
