What software do I need?

What hardware do I need to participate?

You will need the following minimum components on your computer to participate successfully in the CME-Online program:

  • Internet Connection - 56Kbps modem or faster (LAN, Cable, DSL)
  • System Memory - 64MB or greater
  • Processor - 300MHz or faster
  • Operating System - Windows 98 or MacIntosh System 7 (minimum)
  • Sound Card and Speakers

Do I need any special computer skills?

If you can type and have used the World Wide Web, you have all the computer skills you'll need to participate in the online courses.

Do I need to come to campus?

No. You can register and complete all course activities online.

Do I need to sign on for class at a specific time?

Participants choose a case discussion section which meets online for one hour at a chosen time weekly for three weeks. During each of these weekly chat sessions the participants discuss a particular case. All other activities (lecture, readings, evaluation, and discussion board) can be completed online whenever convenient during a week-long period.

How long will it take to complete each mini-module?

Mini-modules take 3 to 4 hours over a month's time to complete. You will read background materials, attend an online lecture, participate in 3 online small group case discussions, complete an evaluation, and follow up with your colleagues on a web-based discussion board.

What about CME credit?

The University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) College of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to sponsor continuing medical education for physicians.

If a CME Online course has been approved for CME credit, it will be so designated in the course description.  If not specifically stated in the course description, please assume that CME credit is not available for the particular course.

How do I participate in classes?

You will read background materials, attend an online lecture, participate in 3 online small group case discussions, complete an evaluation, and follow up with your colleagues on a web-based discussion board.

What if I have questions after the course is over?

After completing a mini-module, you will have access to a discussion board dedicated to the topic addressed in that mini-module for a period of one year. Questions posted to the discussion board can be addressed by your instructor and by colleagues continuing the collaborative learning process.
