Overhead Projections

Using overhead projections is a very reliable medium for presentations. However, like all other media it has its advantages and disadvantages.

Overhead projections can be used effectively with an audience in a number of ways. The presenter never has to turn away and can always face the audience. The audience size is not a factor, as long as the screen is large enough and a microphone is used to compensate for a large room. The presenter can interact with the transparency to keep the audience stimulated. This medium also benefits the presenter in the fact that they are inexpensive to produce. The overheads also keep the presenter organized and prevent a loss of thought. The materials are also easily attainable and transported by the presenter.

The disadvantages of overheads are limited by the subject matter. For example, overheads are poor for illustrating motion and highly interactive processes. Overheads also have negative effects when they are numerous and monotonous. Due to their inexpensive cost of production this can lead to numerous similar transparencies and may take away from the presentation. Also, always remember to tilt the screen a little or the image will become distorted and enlarged toward the top.

Transparencies are very effective when the presentation is not too long and the overheads can be varied. It is always good to face the audience and interact with the overhead transparency. Use them as a teaching aid and not a source, keep them shorter and use them to stress key points.
