Slides

Slides are widely used for presentations. They are very different from other types of media. Slides can be used to benefit one’s presentation for many reasons, but should not be used for others.

Slides are effective at stimulating an audience when used properly. When multiple slide projectors are used and the show is set to audio the audience has a tendency to stay focused. Slide projectors that are equipped with remote control advance enables the presenter to walk around and not get stuck by the projector. Slides are more adept to simulating motion especially when more than one projector is used. They also allow the presenter to incorporate a large amount of images and text at the same time. Also the high quality images are easily attainable and do not require knowledge of production. The slides are easily updateable and duplicated. The sequencing affect of slides enables the presenter to effectively demonstrate a building process or any process that involves a successive amount of steps. They are more professional than overheads, but still lend themselves to individualized and group instruction.

Most of the drawback of slide use lies in their maintenance. They are easily lost due to their small size. They are also easily damaged and the damage is permanent. Keep them stored in an organized manner and in a safe place. On the other hand slides can be detrimental to a presentation because they are not interactive. Also the room must always be dark, as opposed to overheads which can be used in any lighting. Slides are also in a set order and this takes away from the flexibility of the presenter and his/her presentation.

Slides should be used when the presentation is image oriented and the idea of realism is to be conveyed. The visual interest factor is beneficial for maintaining the interest level. Use slide for processes illustrating steps and sequences.
