PC exercise 1 (SPSS V 6.1 for Windows)

[1] Make a copy of "AVERY.DAT" file on your own floppy. You need to save your work on this floppy since anything left on the hard disk of the PC at UIC will be erased.

(Go to the web page under class materials. Click DATASET for project and save.)

[2] Start Windows and open SPSS for Windows.

[3] Go through a tutorial program under HELP. This will take about one hour. Read the handout.

[4] Open the AVERY.DAT, AVERY data file in ASCII format.

(Select FILE, then OPEN ASCII DATA, choose drive A:, double-click AVERY.DAT.)

[5] Select Question 1, 2, and 3 based on Table 13A.1, Coding Format.

(Name = V2, Starting Column = 4, click ADD.)

(Name = V3, Starting Column = 5, click ADD.)

(Name = V4, Starting Column = 6, click ADD. Then click OK.)

[6] Define the three variables.

(double-click V2, then click LABELS. For VARIABLE LABELS = 'Percentage through catalog'. VALUE='1', VALUE LABEL='0 %', click ADD. VALUE='2', VALUE LABEL='1-10%', click ADD, so on. click CONTINUE. click MISSING VALUE. click DISCRETE MISSING VALUE and type '0'. click CONTINUE and then OK. Repeat for V3 and V4.)

[7] Obtain Frequency table for V2 as in Table 13A.3.

(choose STATISTICS, SUMMARIZE, and FREQUENCIES. select V2. click STATISTICS and choose several measures, click CONTINUE. click CHART, select BAR CHART, click CONTINUE. click OK.)

[8] Obtain Cross table for V3 by V4 as in Table 13A.4.

(choose STATISTICS, SUMMARIZE, and CROSSTABS. select V3 for row and V4 for column. click STATISTICS and choose CHI-SQUARE, click CONTINUE. click CELLS, choose OBSERVED, ROW, COLUMN, and TOTAL, click CONTINUE. click OK.)

[9] Copy the frequency table and crosstab, and paste to and edit in a word processing program, and submit a printout.

(choose the two tables by dragging a mouse, click EDIT and COPY. Start MS WORD and paste. If the alignment is incorrect, use CURRIER font. Edit if necessary, and save and print out the document.)
