COURSE OBJECTIVES

The purpose of this course is to develop an understanding of some of the theories and pragmatic approaches to management, competitive strategies, and business policy which can be applied to the solution of problems in an organizational setting.  The emphasis will be on various areas and techniques of management, such as tasks, responsibilities and competitive practices.  An overview of the major managerial functions and behavioral forces active in American and International business will be an additional objective.

Our premise is that within our society of institutions, responsible performance is entrusted to managers and management.  The safeguard of our freedom and the insurance of our free enterprise system rest on a high level of achievement.  Management will be viewed threefold: as a task, with a look at dimensions of the task and requirements with respect to each of them; as a discipline, an organized body of knowledge and as such, applicable in every area of society; and in the last analysis, as a practice, with its focus on performance and results.

APPROACH

While some classes will be in the traditional lecture form, it is my hope that most of our classroom time can be spent in discussion and in dialogue.  This hope can be realized only if students read and reflect upon assigned materials prior to the class discussion.  Visiting lecturers and discussion will be the focus.  They will illustrate competitive strategies, strategic planning, acquisitions, and profits in free market systems, and the impact of organizational and environmental change on senior managerial decision-making as applied to their organizations.  It is essential, therefore, to read the text and handouts before coming to class.  This will make the class sessions more meaningful, giving an enlightened perspective.  There will be a limited number of lectures for the purpose of integrating the assigned material and to comment on our visiting lecturers.

TEXTBOOK INFORMATION

The textbook, "Strategies and Leadership, Impact on Organizational Performance" by Professor J. Fred McLimore is available in the Professor’s office.  In addition, some chapters from “Strategic Management Concepts & Cases” by Arthur Thompson  & A.J. Simpson are included in the class packet that you must purchase.  A new book titled “Open Book Management” will be used for this class.  Selected chapters from this book have been placed in the packet.  You are expected to understand its philosophy and concept.  “Open book management” is a philosophy that eliminates the traditional way of thinking in companies.  The other assigned readings must be purchased in a packet form (price = $52).  Please be prepared to pay for the packet during the first two weeks of the semester.  You will also be given an annual report of each of the companies represented by our guest lecturers as well as his/her biographical sketch.  You will be responsible for, and tested on the assigned readings and all handouts (including annual reports).  It is important that you have studied these materials in advance of the class session in which the speaker is featured.  I remind you that there are many fine references in the UIC library & on the internet to research the companies and industries.

SPEAKER REVIEWS

In order to provide meaningful feedback to the guest lecturers and to help integrate the reading

assignments with the lecturers' presentations, each student will be required to write a total of seven (7) one-page reviews for the guest lecturers.  An outline and a sample review are included in the first section of the packet that you will purchase at the beginning of the semester. It is very important that you follow the format in order to receive full points.  The reviews are due one week after each presentation, unless otherwise specified.  They should be typed and approximately one page.  We plan to send your reviews to the speakers so be accurate, open, and fair.  Extra credit will be given for any additional speaker reviews you hand in.

ASSIGNMENTS & CASE STUDIES

Assignments and Case Studies will be assigned in class by Professor McLimore regarding class lectures and reading material.  A detailed format on how to write a case study can be found at the beginning of the course packet.  Case Studies will weigh slightly more heavily than the regular assignments.  ALL ASSIGNMENTS MUST BE TURNED IN.  FAILURE TO COMPLETE ALL ASSIGNMENTS WILL RESULT IN AN INCOMPLETE.

PRESENTATIONS

Each student will be assigned to a team for one company’s guest lecturer visiting the class.

Each team will be required to give a presentation on the company to which they are assigned.  At the end of the presentation, all members of the team will grade their teammates on their contributions which will be due one class period after your presentation.  Peer evaluations factor heavily into each person’s presentation grade, which is worth 25% of your final grade.  More information on the presentation and team assignments will be given in class and in the class packet which you are required to purchase.

COFFEE SESSIONS

On a day a guest lecturer is scheduled, we will have an informal discussion before the 11:00 am

class.  I would like you to attend all coffee sessions.  This can be a real learning experience.  These informal coffees will be held at 10:00 am in Room 2250 UH.  The guest lecturers who will be coming to our class are very busy individuals.  Their hope is to make a contribution to your learning process, to enter in a dialogue with you, and to build a better understanding between the academic theories within the classroom and the reality of the business world.  If you have a class conflict at the time of the coffee session, your absence will not reflect negatively in your grade; however, you should make arrangements to attend the coffee session that corresponds to the speaker of which you are giving your presentation.  Attendance at the informal coffee sessions can reflect positively in your grade. So please, show your interest and respect by attending the coffee sessions.

LUNCHES

Students are invited to attend lunch with our guests, and faculty members. It will be required of you to attend your team luncheon. I think it is a good investment, and another excellent learning experience.

ATTENDANCE

Attendance is required and will be taken each class period.  An absence will occur if a student fails to attend or if a student comes to class late.  After two (2) unexcused absences, the grade may be lowered one (1) letter grade.  Students will be assigned seats and attendance will be taken each class session according to our seating chart.  If for some reason you do not sit in your assigned seat, it will be your responsibility to inform the TA before the end of the class period that you are in attendance that day.  If you do not inform the TA, you will be marked absent.  No exceptions.

OTHER INFORMATION

I urge you to read the Wall Street Journal daily and Business Week weekly.  I will provide subscription blanks for you to receive these publications at a reduced cost.  Subscription for Wall Street Journal includes the online subscription (www.wsj.com).You should be prepared to discuss current events in class with me and the guest lecturers.

TEAM MEETINGS AT PROFESSOR MCLIMORE’S

Each team is invited to attend a rehearsal/progress report meeting at Professor McLimore’s house on the Sunday night designated by Professor McLimore in class.  These meetings are held on Sunday nights, from 6:30-8:30 PM at Professor McLimore’s house, located at 2064 W. Pratt (approximately 2 miles west of Sheridan Road).  We strongly recommend that everyone in the team attend these meetings.  It is a good chance to meet informally so that Professor McLimore can get to know each of you better and to ensure an excellent presentation.
