COURSE DESCRIPTION AND OBJECTIVES:  Management 575 is an advanced seminar in human resources management that provides a broad coverage of topics in the human resources field.  The seminar will be research-focused and discussions will involve critical review and evaluation of existing work and potential avenues for future rearch.  Through reading assignments and a research paper, students should gain an appreciation for the existing state of research and begin to articulate major issues and challenges facing this field.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS: There are three main course requirements: involvement in class discussion of the assigned articles, a theoretical paper, and a final exam.  First, students are required to read and be prepared to discuss the assigned articles for each week.  The students will rotate as the “discussion leader.”  Second, each student will write a theoretical paper on a human resource management topic.  Third, students will take a final exam.

Class discussion and discussion leader role:  Each week we will discuss the articles listed under each topic. You should critically read each article and be prepared to discuss your opinions, observations, insights, and inspirations from each article.  If you are the discussion leader for the week, you should prepare a set of questions related to the articles.  These questions should be distributed via e-mail to the instructor and to everyone in the class at least 48 hours before the class session.  In addition to discussing each article, you should spend at least 30 minutes talking about the articles as a set.  For example, you could discuss:  (1) the similarities and differences among the articles; (2) what we know or don’t know about this topic; (3) how the studies build upon each other; etc.

Theoretical paper:  A theoretically rigorous paper that holds the potential to advance theory, research, and practice in human resources management is required.  This paper may be (a) a comprehensive literature review with an agenda for future research (see for example Sullivan, 1999, Journal of Management), or (b) a proposal of a new conceptual, integrative, model with propositions for future research (see for example Black et al., 1991, Academy of Management Review).  The paper should not exceed 35 double-spaced pages of text (including references, tables, and figures).  This paper must be on an HR-related topic, but I encourage you to choose an appropriate topic that has potential for your dissertation.  Your paper is due April 24, 2000 during class.  You should prepare a 20-minute formal presentation of your paper.  Paper presentations will be held on April 24.  Please use overheads.

Final exam:  An essay exam will be given during final exam week.  The exam will be similar to a preliminary examination question and will consist of multiple parts.  You will be able to refer to the articles but you will not be allowed to use your class notes.
