Recent research findings on fluoride treatment for the initial caries
lesion include:
1. Three applications of fluoride varnish in one week
provide greater caries protection than one application every six months
over a one-year period. Fluoride varnish is best applied immediately after
tooth cleaning and should be protected as long as possible, preferably at
least 10 hours.
2. Fluoride varnish and topical fluoride gel appear to
be equally effective.
3. Fluoride varnish can be applied more frequently than
a gel.
4. Fluoride varnish should be applied to smooth surfaces
and as sealants to fissure sites.
5. Fluoride varnish is useful in children (infant nursing
caries).
